Graduates working on yachts get to see the world while getting paid to do so.
Working on Yachts is amazing – You get to travel the world without having to pay for food or accommodation (while earning a salary!)

.

So you decided that you don’t want to work in a boring office job, but instead want to travel the world. This is a dream that many people aspire to but many never follow through with. One of the best and most affordable ways to do this, is by becoming a yacht crew member, such as a deckhand.

But you might be thinking: “Don’t you need experience for working on yachts? And don’t you need to study a formal qualification for it?”

Luckily, it’s never been easier to get qualified for crew work – all you need is an STCW qualification and you’re all set! No experience needed!

Get Your STCW to Work on Yachts

An STCW-10 (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) is the minimum legal qualification you need for working on yachts. It is internationally recognised, meaning you’re qualified to work anywhere in the world.

If you want to give yourself more of a competitive edge, consider getting a license to drive a powerboat and/or jetski. Since many commercial vessels have smaller sea vehicles that would require qualified crew members to drive them, having a license will make you all the more desirable to hire.

Lastly, you will also need a medical certificate to prove that you are medically fit to work on yachts. This can be obtained from any doctor or clinic.

Choose Cape Town

We here at ADrenaline Boats offer world-class and enjoyable STCW training at our site in Cape Town, South Africa. Most of the world’s yacht crew members are South African, as there is, unsurprisingly, a vibrant seafaring culture here. You can rest assured that you will get nothing but top-notch training for your yacht crew certification, which will make it all the more easy to find work on yachts. We will also give you valuable insights into creating a CV/resume that will best prepare for your job search (you can read a testimonial from one of our STCW graduates, Shelsea).

You watch our videos of what some of the STCW training looks like here.

But that’s not even the best part yet: Since South Africa has such a low cost of living compared to the majority of the Western world (especially Europe), you will find that you would be able to afford doing your STCW certification AND be pay for a flight AND even stay for an extended holiday all for the same price as it would cost JUST to do your training Europe.

Cape Town is a breathtaking global tourist destination, with many attractions for you to experience. You can check out our Cape Town travel videos here.

Craft a Killer CV/Resume

Now that you’ve got your qualifications in place, it’s time to create an interview-winning CV for yacht crew work.

To do this, it’s important to keep three key things in mind when writing your application document:

  1. Keep it relevant – List only the skills that relate directly to working on yachts
  2. Keep it short – Don’t make it a chore for hirers to read through your CV, they often get hundreds of applications to go through. Less is more!
  3. Personalise it every time – Make sure that you take the time to see what companies are looking for in their job listings and try to use the same language for your relevant qualifications
